April 20, 2026 ~ Mary Sheffield, Mayor of Detroit, joins Sandy Baruah to discuss affordable housing, her time as mayor so far, and more.
DETROIT ~ On Monday, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield spoke about her administration’s work so far on addressing affordable housing availability to Detroiters.
“One, we’re working on trying to reduce property taxes, which is a longer-term fix, but we’re in the process now of creating a comprehensive package of deals that we can take to Lansing that will hopefully significantly reduce property taxes in Detroit,” Sheffield told WJR. “Secondly, we’re also trying to raise the incomes of Detroiters. When we talk about affordable housing, we often talk about the cost of housing, but not the ability for people to afford housing in general. This administration’s approach is to really invest in people, reduce poverty, build our middle class, and try to raise the incomes of residents.”
Recently, Sheffield issued an executive order to more than double contributions to the city’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
