WASHINGTON D.C. ~ In a 6-3 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court bucked President Donald Trump’s push to end birthright citizenship, delivering a blow to his campaign against immigration.
Trump signed an executive order last year attempting to end the long-standing Constitutional interpretation that children born on U.S. soil are guaranteed full citizenship, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. The order attempted to stop citizenship being given to children born to undocumented immigrants or temporary residents.
“The Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to ‘every free-born person in this land,’” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the court’s majority decision. “We keep that promise today.”
