IRAN ~ Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran are in jeopardy after the former seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran seemingly set to skip the next round of peace talks.
The cargo ship was attacked and seized on Monday amid the U.S.’s ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz that began about a week ago after the first round of direct negotiations broke down. Iranian officials said the U.S. seizure was an act of “piracy” and vowed to respond to the attack. Iran closed the Strait to its adversaries after the U.S. and Israel began their military campaign against the nation on Feb. 28.
This puts a strain on peace talks set for Pakistan, with Presient Doanld Trump sending Vice President JD Vance and other U.S. officials to the country on Monday for negotiations. However, Iranian officials have reported that the nation has “no plans” to attend these talks. The two-week ceasefire between the nations is set to expire on April 22.
Iran’s Legal Medicine Organization recently reported that 3,375 people have been killed by U.S.-Israeli airstrikes, with Israel’s campaign in Lebanon killing over 2,000 people. In retaliation, Iran has launched attacks across the region at U.S. allies, killing dozens in Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates.
