DUBAI, United Arab Emirates ~ A frightening midair emergency aboard a FlyDubai flight bound for Israel has drawn attention after reports that one pilot attacked another in the cockpit, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Aviation and security experts said the actions of crew members and passengers helped prevent what could have become a greater tragedy as the aircraft landed safely.
Former FBI official Andy Arena said the incident raises questions about aviation security and whether threats can originate from inside the cockpit rather than from passengers. As investigators work to determine whether the attack was linked to radicalization, a mental health crisis or another factor, officials are examining the pilot’s background, contacts and online activity to better understand what led to the disturbance.
