MICHIGAN ~ Michigan is being baked by an intense heat wave that began this week, with most of the state under an extreme warning.
Much of Southern and Mid Michigan, including Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Lansing, is under an extreme heat warning that began Tuesday afternoon and will last through 8 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Southeast Michigan will be under an extreme heat watch for the same time frame, with the heat index potentially reaching 103-110 degrees.
Temperature highs will stay in the 90s and reach to around 100 degrees during the heat wave, with extended periods of hot and humid conditions expected Tuesday through at least Thursday. Even overnight temperatures will be warm, dipping only to around 80 degrees.
The weather service recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of
the sun, and checking up on relatives and neighbors amid the scorching temperatures. People should not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. People are also advised to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening, and take action when they see symptoms of heat stroke.
