May 12, 2026 ~ Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy discusses the newly launched gun safety campaign.
DETROIT, MICH. ~ Gun safety is a huge problem in Michigan, especially for younger adults, as firearms are the leading cause of death for children not just in the state, but the country as well, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is working to bring awareness to proper gun storage in a new campaign, as her research found that 91% of the time they found unlocked guns, they were loaded as well.
“But these particular deaths are completely preventable, if lawful gun owners that have children coming into their homes or going into their cars just take a few minutes every day to safely secure their weapons,” Worthy said on Focus. “And we could save the lives of these 39 children we have lost or either been seriously injured since the year 2000.”
Worthy and Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield teamed up for the audio project which can be heard on the air and online.
