LANSING ~ Gov. Gretchen Whitmer hopes to make free school breakfasts and lunches a permanent law before her term ends this year, though the plan has detractors.
Universal school lunches have been funded under the state budget for years, with Democrats touting the program for helping low-income families with the costs of feeding their children. There are currently two state Senate bills that aim to ensure the program has a spot in state budget negotiations.
However, Republicans like Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall have criticized the program, claiming it disproportionately funds wealthier school districts since many less wealthy districts already receive federal funding for school lunches.
