April 28, 2026 ~ ‘JR Afternoon host Ryan Ermanni reports from the King Charles address in D.C.
WASHINGTON D.C. ~ King Charles III became the first British monarch to address Congress since 1991 Tuesday afternoon, highlighting the long-standing history between the United States and the United Kingdom.
In the roughly 30-minute speech, Charles covered a range of topics. From U.S. relations with the U.K. post 9/11, to Ukraine, and even climate change, Charles stressed the importance of partnership to fight these issues.
Ryan Ermanni, host of WJR’s “‘JR Afternoon,” was the official guest of Republican Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-5) for the address, and the biggest thing he noticed was the bipartisanship between lots of different members of Congress.
“For the Republicans, I think they’re going to hold on to the fact that King Charles said, ‘Words are one thing, but we have to judge people by their actions.’ And I think that was a clear message,” Ermanni said on The Mitch Albom Show.
To commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, the King and Queen Camilla began a multi-day visit on Monday to Washington, D.C. that will last until April 30. The royals met with President Donald Trump on Monday for a private party and meal.
The monarchs are visiting amid strained relations between the U.S. and the U.K., with Trump attacking the U.K. leadership over its opposition to participating in the Iran War that was launched by the U.S. and Israel two months ago.
