October 1, 2026 ~ Sarah Hubbard, University of Michigan Board of Regents member, joins Kevin to discuss the university’s decision to pause a plan that would have masked freshman grades.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. ~ The University of Michigan has paused a proposed grading pilot that would have replaced first-semester letter grades with pass-or-no-credit marks for incoming students in its College of Literature, Science and the Arts. University leaders said the plan was designed to help students adjust to college life and explore new subjects without the pressure of grades, but the proposal was put on hold following public criticism.
For many students and families, the debate has centered on balancing academic rigor with student well-being. University President Domenico Grasso said the pause will allow for additional input and discussion as the school considers the future of the proposal.
