DETROIT ~ Former Detroit television journalist Devin Scillian is returning to his storytelling roots with the debut of his new play, Bastard, which opens Sept. 24 at the Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea. Inspired by family relationships and personal experiences, the production follows two estranged brothers reunited after their mother’s death, forcing them to confront old wounds and unexpected revelations.
Scillian said the move into playwriting reflects a lifelong passion for storytelling that began in theater before his journalism career. Encouraged by his wife and longtime friend Jeff Daniels, Scillian embraced the collaborative nature of live theater and said the experience has reinforced his belief in the unique human connection that only a live performance can create.
