DETROIT ~ History was made Friday morning when the city of Detroit swore in its first-ever woman mayor.
Mary Sheffield, 38, officially became mayor at the Detroit Opera House during the Rise Higher Detroit! Investiture Ceremony, with the event attended by hundreds of Detroit-area residents and leaders. Sheffield delivered a speech that brought up some of her goals as mayor, including investing improving public transit options and access to affordable housing.
“Detroit, our futures are bound together,” Sheffield told the crowd. “The success of this city cannot be measured by the progress of a few, but it must be measured by the well-being of all. Progress is only real when it reaches everyone, every family, in every community in this city.”
Sheffield won her bid to become mayor last fall, becoming the first woman to ever become Detroit’s mayor-elect. The ceremony saw members of her family and other notable politicians such as Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Sen. Elissa Slotkin (MI-D), Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, and now former Mayor Mike Duggan. WJR‘s Lloyd Jackson was the emcee for the event.
The ceremony also swore in Detroit’s board of police commissioners, city council members, and City Clerk Janice Winfrey.
