ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. ~ The use of Flock Safety cameras is drawing increased attention as a Senate Judiciary subcommittee examines how license plate reader data is collected, stored and shared with law enforcement agencies. The hearing featured testimony from witnesses who raised concerns about privacy, data security and cases in which camera data was linked to wrongful investigations.
Among those who testified was a Florida woman who was jailed after investigators connected her vehicle to a fatal crash despite evidence that later cleared her. The discussion also highlighted concerns about how law enforcement agencies search and oversee the data, as well as whether additional safeguards are needed as communities across the country, including St. Clair Shores, use the technology.
