DETROITÂ ~ Canadian counter-tariffs on billions of dollars’ worth of U.S. goods took effect Tuesday, following the collapse of trade talks between Ottawa and Washington last month.
The tariffs apply to approximately $27.6 billion in U.S. imports and range from 15% to 50%, depending on the product. Affected goods include steel, aluminum, dairy products, electronics, household appliances, agricultural equipment, furniture, and clothing. Canadian officials have described the move as a “dollar-for-dollar” response to tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian exports.
The tariffs take effect after trade talks between Ottawa and Washington stalled last month, with officials on both sides blaming the other for the breakdown in negotiations. The dispute has raised concerns about the future of North American trade relations and the impact on businesses that rely on cross-border supply chains.
