DETROIT ~ President Donald Trump’s support among Republican voters remains strong overall, but a new poll suggests enthusiasm within his base has softened ahead of the November midterm elections.
The NBC News Decision Desk poll found that 41% of Republicans strongly approve of Trump’s job performance, down from 52% in a similar survey conducted earlier this year. Among self-identified MAGA supporters, strong approval fell from 71% to 62%. Despite the decline, overall support for Trump within the Republican Party remains high, with about 80% of Republicans expressing approval of his performance.
The polling comes as economic issues continue to weigh on voters. A Financial Times/Focaldata survey found Trump’s overall approval rating at 33%, the lowest level recorded in that poll series since May. The survey also showed growing dissatisfaction with inflation, the cost of living, and the direction of the U.S. economy.
Even among Republican voters, support for Trump’s handling of jobs and the economy has softened. One poll found 53% of Republicans approved of his performance on economic issues, a decline from the previous month. The polling comes amid continued voter concerns about inflation, fuel prices, and household costs, issues that several surveys identified as weighing on the president’s approval ratings.
The findings come less than two months before the November midterm elections, when Republicans will be looking to maintain voter turnout in key congressional and statewide races.
