ALLEN PARK, Mich. ~ The Detroit Lions continue to work through a few minor injuries as training camp rolls on, but head coach Dan Campbell does not appear concerned about the status of wide receiver Jameson Williams or cornerback Nick Whiteside. Williams is dealing with a shoulder issue, while Whiteside is nursing a hamstring injury, but Campbell indicated neither injury is considered serious. The Lions are also carefully managing defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike’s workload as he works his way back into full action. Campbell praised the veteran’s progress and expects him to continue being a disruptive presence along the defensive front.
One of the biggest storylines in camp remains the development of the offensive line. Second-year offensive lineman Tate Ratledge has been getting some work at center in addition to his natural guard position as Detroit looks to build depth and versatility across the unit. Campbell emphasized that while Ratledge is expected to remain at right guard for now, cross-training players gives the team valuable insurance if injuries force changes during the regular season.

(CONTINUED) The Lions are also using camp to sort out roles in the secondary, particularly at nickel cornerback. Several players have rotated through the position as coaches evaluate different skill sets, including coverage ability, run support, blitzing and communication. With veteran additions and young players competing for snaps, Campbell wants to identify the best combinations while also building chemistry among the defensive backs before the season begins.
Campbell also expressed confidence in the competitive environment Detroit has created internally despite not holding joint practices this year. He pointed to matchups such as Penei Sewell facing Aidan Hutchinson in practice as examples of high-level competition taking place every day. Looking ahead, Campbell said a significant number of starters are expected to see action in the Lions’ preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Saturday, although not every starter will play as the coaching staff continues balancing preparation with player health.
