PITTSBURGH, PA. ~ After an 8-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on ESPN’s Monday Night Baseball, the Detroit Tigers are knocking on the door of an AL Wild Card berth.
Despite struggles from the pitching staff, the Tigers’ offense has been red hot as of late. On Monday night at PNC Park, rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle continued the remarkable start to his career with a two-run home run, pushing his season totals to 13 home runs and 50 runs batted in.
Other young players like center fielder Max Clark and infielder Hao-Yu Lee have also been stepping up in a big way. Lee tallied two RBIs in the first game of the series against Pittsburgh while Clark ripped his ninth RBI of the season down the left field line in the fifth inning.
While the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox claim the top two spots in the Wild Card race, Detroit sits in third, tied with the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles. In regard to the AL Central, the Tigers sit 4.5 games back of the Chicago White Sox after getting swept at home over the weekend. The Minnesota Twins remain a half game back from Detroit while the Cleveland Guardians sit one full game back from the Tigers after a series loss at Comerica Park last week.
