October 5, 2026 ~ Jamie Edmonds and Lloyd Jackson speak with MSU Professor, Josh Siegel, about his ‘AI Mechanic’, an AI program he created to help restore and repair cars.
EAST LANSING ~ Researchers at Michigan State University are developing an artificial intelligence system that can detect equipment problems before a breakdown occurs by analyzing sounds produced by machines. The technology is designed to learn what normal operation sounds like and identify subtle changes that could signal an impending failure, allowing mechanics and equipment operators to address issues before they become more costly or disruptive.
The research team is testing the technology on vehicles, manufacturing equipment, generators, compressors and other machinery with the goal of reducing downtime and repair costs. Developers say the system can already detect certain problems, such as clogged engine air filters, and in some cases identify the specific component likely to fail, helping users schedule maintenance before a breakdown occurs.
