MISSAUKEE COUNTY ~ A shooting in Missaukee County on Friday left six dead, including 39-year-old suspect Chad Hickman, and another hospitalized. Three victims have been identified by family members and the official investigation is ongoing.
According to the Missaukee County Sheriff’s office, troopers were dispatched to a home in Lake Township after a 911 call reported a person shot. That caller was 13-year-old Bella Everitt, who had been shot four times when she contacted police, as Bella’s grandfather David Everitt confirmed on Facebook Saturday. He also identified his daughter Amanda Everitt, 40, and grandson Eric Everitt, 16, as deceased victims. Bella’s condition was critical at the time of the call, but she is now in stable condition, according to police.
Other deceased victims including a 45-year-old man found in the Everitt home, a 53-year-old man found in a separate home, and a 29-year-old woman found in a nearby wooded area have not yet been identified by name. Police said Hickman’s body was found with a gunshot wound alongside the woman.
According to court records, Hickman served one year in jail following a 2024 conviction for misdemeanor fourth-degree child abuse. Neighbors later reported that he made violent threats after his release.
Michigan State Police have not confirmed the suspect’s motives. Lt. Ashley Miller called the case “heartbreaking for the community and challenging for investigators involved.” She added “We remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as new information becomes available.”
