DETROIT ~ SAY Detroit on Monday announced progress in the renovation of the historic St. Cecilia’s gym, supported by a $5 million donation from philanthropist Steve Ballmer. The event brought together SAY Detroit founder Mitch Albom, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, Mayor Mary Sheffield, former Mayor Mike Duggan, former Mayor Dave Bing, and Ballmer, along with SAY Detroit students.
Speakers outlined plans to restore the landmark gym and expand academic and recreational programming for Detroit youth. SAY Detroit Director Rick Kelley said the renovation follows recent growth within the organization and will create additional space for education and enrichment. Construction is expected to be completed in 2028.

Students described how SAY Detroit has influenced their academic and personal development. One student said the renovated gym will offer “a safe place to learn, play, create, and build a pathway to the world.”
Leaders said the gathering demonstrated support for the project and the city’s commitment to young people. Organizers said the renovated St. Cecilia’s will serve as a hub for expanded youth programming and community engagement once completed.
