WASHINGTON, D.C. ~ U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday at an Oval Office event that he met with leaders at General Motors and Ford to discuss legislation that would limit vehicle owners from repairing their own cars.
GM CEO Mary Barra and Ford Motor senior executive Andrew Frick both met Trump at the White House earlier this week to talk about the potential bill.
This fight, which has been going on for years, is in attempt to keep access to onboard computer data private from independent auto repair shops and car owners due to security risks.
Lawmakers have been pushing back, as their proposed legislation would allow access to data such as diagnostics and calibration, which would help auto repair owners save money on expensive software.
