DETROIT, Feb. 21, 2024 ~ The Detroit City Council delayed a vote on a new mega-development Tuesday to look over new information about the project following several community members raising concerns over proposed tax breaks that could total $300 million in tax breaks.
The Future of Health development is a collection of projects totaling $3 billion in investments in the New Center area from Henry Ford Health, Michigan State University, and the Detroit Pistons, but saw mixed reactions from public commenters, many seeing the tax breaks as handouts to billionaire Pistons owner Tom Gores. The development, which will council will vote on Feb. 27, would include over 600 mixed-income apartments, an expansion of Henry Ford Hospital, a Henry Ford Health-MSU medical research center, and a parking structure in its current state, with all projects except the hospital expansion receiving tax breaks.
