One Michigan Democrat Representative is Potentially Set To Quash Reproductive Health Act

LANSING, Sept. 21, 2023 ~ As the Michigan Reproductive Health Act legislative package left the House Health Policy Committee, a lone Michigan Democrat representative is threatening to stall the party’s headway on enshrining abortion rights into law.

State Rep. Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit) voted against the bills in the committee, expressing concerns that allowing Medicaid to cover abortions would take away funding for senior healthcare. With the Democrats’ slim 56-54 lead in the state House, a no-vote on the house floor from Whislett could doom the legislation as State Rep. Tom Kunse (R-Clare) said that there is no indication Republicans would support the bill.

Amber McCann, spokeswoman for House Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit), said in multiple outlets that she expects the bill to get 56 votes and that healthcare coverage can be given to one group of people without interfering with another’s coverage.

Beth LeBlanc, a reporter for the Detroit News, spoke more about the issue on “JR Morning with Guy Gordon, Lloyd Jackson, and Jamie Edmonds.”
