Whitmer Signs Bill to Make Health Insurance Companies Cover Mental Health, Substance Abuse Care the Same as Physical Healthcare

LANSING, May 23, 2024 ~ Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill Tuesday that aims to close the gap between mental, substance abuse disorder, and physical healthcare coverage in Michigan.

The new law requires health insurance companies to cover substance abuse and mental health treatments at the same level as physical healthcare. Michigan Association of Health Plans Executive Director Dominick Pallone told WJR that, “There is still a struggle for access, whether that’s over affordability or finding available providers that are that are able to see people. I do think this bill will help folks, especially on the financial aspect.
