JAMIE BUTTERS
Jamie Butters is a veteran automotive journalist with more than 25 years of experience covering the business of making and selling cars, primarily from Detroit, the center of the U.S. auto industry. He has held senior editorial roles at some of the most respected news organizations in the world, including serving as executive editor and chief content officer of Automotive News, where he led coverage across print, digital, and multimedia platforms. His career also includes a decade at Bloomberg News as an editor and team leader, as well as reporting and editing roles at the Detroit Free Press. In 2025, he briefly served as Detroit bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal, overseeing automotive and manufacturing coverage.
Butters began his journalism career at the Lexington Herald-Leader, where he first covered the auto industry, and he has since reported on the sector through pivotal moments ranging from the rise of hybrid vehicles to today’s shift toward electrification. He studied journalism at the University of Iowa, earned a degree in finance from the University of Kentucky, and was a Knight Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan, where he focused on international economics. In addition to his reporting and leadership roles, Butters is an experienced podcast host and industry commentator, known for translating complex automotive topics into clear, engaging conversations for both insiders and general audiences.
