A woman was shot and killed last night while picking up her 11-year-old son from basketball practice on Detroit’s east side. The shooting happened at 8 Mile Road and Sunset Avenue outside the old 8 Mile Light Guard Armory. A man approached the mother’s vehicle and shot her. The 11-year-old son got into the vehicle without realizing what had happened. Police say the woman drove a block; she got out of the car, and tried flagging down another car for help before collapsing. The 42-year-old victim was pronounced dead upon arrival. The boy was able to give police a description of the shooter. The 17-year-old shooter was found at a bus stop nearby and remains in police custody.
