TOLEDO, Ohio ~ Families forced from their homes by a chemical leak are beginning to return after officials lifted the shelter-in-place order at about 5 p.m. Wednesday, bringing relief to thousands of residents who spent hours indoors or away from their neighborhoods. The emergency was caused by a release of glycidyl methacrylate, a chemical that can irritate the eyes, nose, mouth and skin, from a tank at the MC Tank Terminal facility in north Toledo.
While the shelter-in-place order has been lifted, a half-mile evacuation zone remains around the facility as emergency crews continue monitoring conditions and securing the site. For residents living closest to the leak, the situation is not yet over, as many are still waiting for clearance to return home and resume their daily routines.
