WASHINGTON ~ Rising prices at the gas pump and for everyday essentials continued to put pressure on household budgets in September, as inflation rose 3.7% from a year earlier. The higher costs are being felt by many retirees and other Americans living on fixed incomes who closely watch changes in their monthly expenses.
In response, the Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, for 2027, increasing benefits for more than 72 million Americans. For many seniors, the larger payments will help offset rising costs for necessities such as groceries, fuel and health care.
