October 6, 2026 ~ Lloyd Jackson and Mario Morrow talk with Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison about lower summer homicide rates, youth programs, and community safety efforts in the city.
DETROIT ~ Detroit officials are crediting a combination of police efforts, community partnerships and expanded youth programs for a safer summer across the city. Summer homicides fell 25%, while the number of juvenile homicide victims dropped from nine to one. City leaders pointed to increased recreational opportunities, job programs and late-night activities designed to keep young people engaged and connected to resources.
Police Chief Todd Bettison said officers also played a key role through faster response times, proactive investigations and the use of technology to address crime. Bettison said that while violent crime continues to decline, easy access to firearms and disputes fueled by alcohol or drugs remain significant challenges, contributing to incidents that can quickly escalate into gun violence.
