WASHINGTON ~ Phone scams are becoming more convincing as criminals impersonate police officers, government agencies and banks to pressure people into sending money. Victims are often told they missed jury duty, have an outstanding warrant or face another urgent problem, with scammers demanding payment through gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency.
Families are also being warned about scams involving fake emergencies, in which criminals use personal information or AI-generated voices to pose as loved ones in distress. Law enforcement officials say taking a moment to verify the situation, contact a trusted family member or visit a police station or bank in person can help prevent people from becoming victims.
