She reflects on the impact of the Detroit Economic Club’s Career Readiness Academy, the importance of investing in the next generation, and how serving others has become a driving force behind both her professional success and community involvement.
(CONTINUED) One of Byrd’s most meaningful experiences came after joining the Detroit Economic Club in January 2025. As a Career Readiness Academy captain, she worked directly with students as they practiced professional skills, built confidence and explored potential career paths. Watching those young people step outside their comfort zones and begin to believe in their abilities reminded her why mentorship matters. At the same time, Byrd found herself learning from fellow DEC members who shared their experiences, encouragement and advice. The experience reinforced her belief that growth happens when people invest in one another.
Byrd’s commitment to serving others reaches well beyond the DEC. She mentors students through Braven, Oakland University and Wayne State University while also supporting the human resources profession through leadership positions with SHRM OakMac and Detroit SHRM. Whether she is helping a student prepare for a career opportunity or creating professional development resources for industry peers, her focus remains the same: creating pathways for others to succeed.
Asked to describe Detroit in one word, Byrd chooses “resilient.” She believes the city’s future depends on continued investment in education, mentorship and workforce development that helps young people build successful careers close to home. As she continues to grow as a leader, Byrd hopes to create even greater impact by developing talent, strengthening communities and helping the next generation realize its potential. For her, success is not measured by personal achievements alone, but by the lives she helps shape along the way.
