DETROIT ~ Republican gubernatorial nominee John James has selected state Rep. Jay DeBoyer of Clay Township, a leading House Republican and chairman of the Michigan House Oversight Committee, as his running mate for November’s election. James announced the pick Thursday in a social media post.
DeBoyer said his decision to join the ticket was rooted in a desire to continue serving Michigan rather than advancing his political career. “I never really got into politics to climb the ladder,” DeBoyer said today on 760 WJR’s ‘JR Morning. “It was really about serving my community and making my community better.”

(CONTINUED) Despite his conservative credentials, DeBoyer said he has developed working relationships with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and would seek to continue that approach if elected lieutenant governor. He said policy disagreements need not prevent cooperation on issues affecting Michigan families.
In the House, DeBoyer has emerged as a prominent Republican voice on government accountability and oversight. As chairman of the House Oversight Committee, he has led oversight hearings into state agencies and policies while advocating for election integrity measures and increased transparency in state government.
Before joining the Legislature in 2023, DeBoyer served 12 years as St. Clair County clerk and register of deeds after holding local government positions as a Clay Township trustee and supervisor. He also owns an engineered lumber business and has been active in his community through local boards, commissions, and youth sports programs.
Democratic nominee Jocelyn Benson has yet to announce her running mate, though reports indicate a selection could come as early as next week.
