ROME, ITALY ~ Pope Leo XIV experienced a successful surgery Tuesday afternoon at Agostino Gemelli University Policlinic hospital, as doctors removed a part of his lung which was found to have a cancerous growth.
Doctors found evidence of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer, when they further examined the part of his lung they removed.
Leo has said that the growth was detected early on and was under control.
While he recovers, the Vatican will continue to operate, although anything requiring his signature will need to be postponed. His recovery is expected to take about a week, as all public events involving the pontiff have been canceled until Oct. 20.
