LANSING, MICH. ~ Privacy concerns over automatic license plate readers have been growing, and Michigan lawmakers are taking action in attempt to regulate the use of Flock Safety cameras, as the company has more than 180 contracts with law enforcement agencies in the state.
Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party Jim Runestad has introduced a measure that would force ALPR systems to scrub their data every two weeks. It would also require police to have a warrant to access information that doesn’t involve missing persons cases and criminal investigations.
There are other House bills aimed at regulating these devices, as Michigan doesn’t have any uniform rules for ALPRs.
