SEATTLE ~ The United States men’s national team defeated Australia 2-0 on Friday in a World Cup Group D match in Seattle, securing a spot in the knockout stage with one game remaining. The Americans controlled much of the match, holding over 62% possession and dictating the pace throughout the opening half. The win marks a strong start to the tournament for the U.S., which now has two victories in group play.
The U.S. took the lead in the 11th minute after pressure in the box forced an own goal from Australia’s Cameron Burgess. The Americans continued to push forward and doubled their advantage just before halftime when Alex Freeman scored off a rebound following a set-piece opportunity. Despite missing star forward Christian Pulisic due to injury, the U.S. attack created enough chances early to put the game out of reach.

(CONTINUED) Statistically, the United States finished with a 10-5 edge in total shots and earned seven corner kicks to Australia’s four. Both teams registered two shots on target, but the U.S. made better use of its opportunities. Defensively, the Americans held firm, limiting Australia’s chances in the second half and preserving the shutout behind goalkeeper Matt Freese.
The United States will close out group play against Türkiye on June 25 in Los Angeles. With advancement already secured, the focus now shifts to winning the group and improving positioning for the knockout rounds.
