DETROIT, MICH. ~ For the first time since 2017, Tigers’ legend Justin Verlander will take the mound in a Detroit uniform at Comerica Park on Father’s Day.
Verlander’s first and only appearance this year came on March 30 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, giving up five runs in less than four innings before he joined the 60-day injured list with a hip injury. The 43-year-old signed a one-year, $13 million deal in February.
Both the Tigers and Verlander have had their share of ups and downs since his last start. Competing in Triple-A Toledo for two games, Verlander gave up four solo home runs in the second go around, but Detroit manager A.J. Hinch thinks he feels fine to pitch. After a horrible month of May, the Tigers have gotten back on track in June, but still stand six games back of a American League Wild Card spot.
First pitch against the Chicago White Sox Sunday is set for 1:40 p.m.
