DETROIT, MICH. ~ The Rocket Classic is shaping up to feel less like a routine PGA Tour stop and more like a full-on celebration of golf in Detroit. The tournament will take place July 30–Aug. 2 at Detroit Golf Club, anchoring a week that blends high-level competition with creative, fan-focused events across the city. On one hand, the event continues to attract elite global talent, with former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama committing to play for the sixth time. On the other, organizers are pushing boundaries with a rooftop par-3 shootout that takes the game off the course and into downtown Detroit.
Matsuyama’s return adds both credibility and familiarity to the field. The 2021 Masters winner has built his career on consistency, and his continued presence in Detroit signals that the tournament holds real weight among top players. He joins a strong lineup that includes several of the world’s top-ranked golfers, reinforcing the idea that the Rocket Classic, despite being relatively young, has become a meaningful stop on the PGA Tour calendar.

(CONTINUED) While the tournament itself will unfold at Detroit Golf Club, some of the most eye-catching moments may come earlier in the week. On July 28, players such as Xander Schauffele and Cameron Young are expected to take part in the “Par 3 in the D” exhibition, hitting tee shots from the top of a five-story building onto a custom green below. The roughly 100-yard shots, paired with a steep elevation drop, are designed for both competition and spectacle, bringing golf directly into the energy of downtown Detroit.
Together, Matsuyama’s steady presence and the tournament’s experimental edge capture what this year’s Rocket Classic is all about. It’s not just another stop on tour, it’s an intentional effort to showcase the sport in a new way while highlighting the city itself. From elite competition to creative fan experiences, the final days of July will give Detroit one more chance to make its mark on the golf world.
