DETROIT ~ The Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted 11-6 Thursday to approve a contract providing up to $1.5 million for healthcare services at Planned Parenthood of Michigan’s Ferndale health center through August 2028.
The funding will be administered through the Oakland County Health Division and will reimburse Planned Parenthood for eligible services provided to county residents, including cancer screenings, annual wellness exams, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, contraception, and reproductive health counseling. The Ferndale facility is the only Planned Parenthood location operating in Oakland County.

(CONTINUED) Commissioners considered the proposal after Planned Parenthood of Michigan closed health centers in Warren and Livonia, citing financial challenges tied to federal funding and reimbursement changes. County officials said the agreement is intended to help preserve access to healthcare services for Oakland County residents.
The vote followed several hours of public comment from residents supporting and opposing the measure. Supporters said the funding would help maintain access to preventive and reproductive healthcare, while opponents objected to using taxpayer funds for an organization that also provides abortion services.
