NEWARK, N.J. ~ Both pro and anti-ICE protestors squared off over the weekend at Delaney Hall, an immigrant detention center in New Jersey. A heavy police presence was at the scene as the groups clashed over allegations of inhumane conditions.
Anti-ICE protestors were met with tear gas as demonstrations before the weekend rose the tension, as detainees participated in a hunger strike.
The protest that started on Saturday lasted throughout Sunday night’s curfew, which led to multiple arrests. Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka enacted the 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew early Sunday, which remains in effect Monday.
New Jersey’s Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill and the state established a peaceful protest zone before the weekend, citing the two deaths that happened in Minneapolis earlier in the year. After some individuals attacked the zone and the Newark and New Jersey State Police using the barriers, Sherrill condemned the behavior on Sunday and noted that the agitators were mostly from out of state or a part of national extremist groups.
