DETROIT ~ The 2026 World Cup will look different from any tournament before it. Instead of a single host, matches will be played across North America, with the United States taking on a major role. Cities including New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami and Seattle will host games, turning the country into a national stage for the sport. With an expanded field and more matches, the U.S. will sit at the center of the tournament’s attention.
There has already been a glimpse of that energy. On the final tune-up before the tournament, the United States defeated Senegal 3-2 in a pre-World Cup friendly. The match was fast-paced and at times uneven, but it showed the U.S. attack’s potential while also highlighting areas that need improvement before group play begins.

(CONTINUED) The United States enters Group D alongside Paraguay, Australia and Türkiye. The group presents a balanced challenge, with each team bringing a different style of play. While not the most difficult group in the tournament, it leaves little margin for error. A strong opening result will be key if the U.S. hopes to advance without added pressure later in the stage.
The U.S. will open its World Cup against Paraguay on June 12, 2026, in Los Angeles. The match offers both an advantage and added expectations, as playing at home brings support but also pressure. A positive result could set the tone for the tournament, while a slow start would force the U.S. to recover quickly in its remaining group matches.
