OMAHA, Neb. ~ Michigan State opened its Big Ten Tournament run with a statement win, knocking off Purdue 8-4 in a first-round matchup at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha. The Spartans, the No. 12 seed entering the tournament with a 22-31 record, set the tone early against a Purdue team that went 35-18 overall and finished fifth in the conference. Behind an aggressive offensive start and timely pitching, Michigan State controlled the game from the outset and never trailed.
The difference came in the opening innings, when the Spartans jumped on Purdue pitching. Michigan State scored four runs in the first inning and added three more in the second, building a 7-0 lead before the Boilermakers could respond. MSU finished with eight runs on 11 hits, applying steady pressure throughout the lineup and stringing together quality at-bats in a way it struggled to do consistently during the regular season.

(CONTINUED) On the mound, Michigan State relied on its staff to protect the early cushion. The Spartans entered the tournament anchored by sophomore right-hander Aidan Donovan, who carried a 3.84 ERA and a 5-3 record into postseason play. Purdue managed four runs on seven hits, but MSU limited big innings and avoided costly mistakes, forcing the Boilermakers to play from behind all afternoon.
Beyond the numbers, the win reflected a more complete performance from Michigan State. After an inconsistent season, the Spartans delivered early offense, clean defense and enough pitching to close it out. The victory not only marked an upset based on seeding but also showed that MSU can compete with the Big Ten’s top teams. The Spartans will play the winner of Iowa and Illinois on Wednesday night.
