PITTSBURGH ~ Day 3 of the NFL draft does not come with the same buzz as the early rounds, but for the Detroit Lions, it is often where the foundation is built. As Saturday unfolded in Pittsburgh, the Lions went to work adding players who fit the team’s identity: tough, versatile and hungry. Instead of chasing headlines, Detroit focused on depth and competition, leaning on development as the franchise has consistently done under general manager Brad Holmes.
The day began close to home with the selection of Michigan linebacker Jimmy Rolder, a pick that resonated with local fans. Rolder is known for his instincts and effort and is expected to contribute early on special teams while developing defensively. Detroit then addressed the secondary by selecting Keith Abney II out of Arizona State, a physical cornerback who brings size and tackling ability. Later in the fifth round, the Lions traded up to take Kendrick Law, a quick slot receiver from Kentucky who adds speed and playmaking ability to the offense.

(CONTINUED) Detroit closed the day by reinforcing the defensive line, continuing an emphasis on physicality in the trenches. Sixth‑round pick Skyler Gill‑Howard out of Texas Tech brings versatility and motor to the interior, while seventh‑round selection Tyre West from Tennessee adds depth and run‑stopping ability up front. Neither player is guaranteed a role, but both fit the profile of players the Lions value in their rotation.
None of Detroit’s Day 3 selections is expected to start immediately, but that is rarely the goal this late in the draft. Instead, the Lions added players who can contribute on special teams, push for roster spots and develop within the system. The picks may not have been flashy, but they reflect a steady and deliberate approach, one that continues to shape Detroit’s roster heading into the 2026 season.
