March 12, 2026 ~ State Rep. Pat Outman explains new legislation that would impose a per‑mile tax on large commercial EVs — a policy that could open the door to broader EV road‑use fees.
DETROIT, MICH. ~ With the continued shift to electric vehicles, Michigan lawmakers are attempting to make sure EVs pay their share in taxes. The focus is currently on heavier EV semi-trucks, as legislature previously passed a bill allowing weight exemptions for these trucks to support their batteries. The new structure would make EV semi-trucks report and pay by the mile, similar to the process of what international diesel trucks already go through. While EVs have yet to dominate the roads, lawmakers are taking initiative so that the current gas tax that funds road maintenance won’t be heavily relied on in the future as the motor landscape evolves.
