MICHIGAN ~ A set of bills was introduced late last week in the Michigan House to put a moratorium on new data center construction due to concerns in local communities over excessive water and energy usage.
HB 5994-5996, or the Data Center Regulation Act, would pause all state and local permits for data centers until April 1, 2027 to allow local communities to assess any possible negative results from having these data centers next to their communities. If the bills ever make it out of committee and the legislature, it may still fall at the final hurdle, as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has indicated that she opposes any pause on data center development, claiming that they are drivers of jobs and economic growth in Michigan.
The surge in data centers in largley due to rapid growth and investment in AI technology, though many Michigan voters may not know how to feel about these centers yey. A recent survey from the Detroit Regional Chamber found that 67% did not hold a strong opinion for or against these data centers.
