Feb. 3, 2026 ~ Chris Renwick and Jamie Edmonds speak with Congressman Tim Walberg. He discusses the DHS funding vote and the current situation with ICE and border security.
WASHINGTON D.C. ~ While the federal government shutdown entered its fourth day Tuesday, Congress and the Trump administration may have already reached an agreement to end it.
The main contention causing the shutdown is funding for the Department of Homeland Security, with Democrats pushing for changes to ICE following the agency’s high-profile killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. The shutdown is not as disruptive as last fall’s record-breaking shutdown, though delays for flights and some government workers could happen.
The House is working to pass funding for DHS to operate for two weeks while disagreements between Democrats and Republicans are worked out.
“It is not really a problem of ICE. It’s not a problem of homeland security law,” Walberg told WJR. “It is a problem of leadership in states like Minneapolis, where the governor, the mayor of Minneapolis, and the mayor of St. Paul are encouraging this type of thing to happen, and people are dying as a result of that.“
