DETROIT ~ Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Americans are once again pausing to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the heroes who responded when the nation needed them most. Across the country, families, survivors and first responders are gathering to honor those memories and reflect on a day that changed the United States forever.
While a generation has grown up knowing 9/11 only through history books and stories, the impact of that day continues to be felt in communities across America. As flags fly at half-staff and moments of silence mark the anniversary, many say the lessons of unity, resilience and remembrance remain just as important today as they were 25 years ago.
Among those reflecting on the day is Patrick Anderson, who survived the Sept. 11 attacks while in New York City and has spent years working to preserve the memories of Michigan victims through the Michigan Remembers 9/11 Fund. “These people should not be forgotten,” Anderson said. “They were real humans with families and careers and futures.”
