MICHIGAN ~ State Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak) called for an “overhaul” to ICE amid backlash to recent killings of civilians at the hands of federal agents in Minneapolis.
McMorrow, who is also running for Michigan‘s open U.S. Senate seat, told WJR that the overhaul should be done through the budget process to “ensure that we return this agency back to its purpose” of immigration and customs enforcement. She added that she believes in better vetting and training of ICE officers and that she thinks the “heat really needs to be brought down.”
“We have multiple instances over the last few weeks of American citizens being killed by federal agents, and that is terrifying,” she said. “Minnesota is not very different from Michigan, and I’m really encouraged to see somebody like Mayor Michael Taylor out of Sterling Heights really differentiating between what local law enforcement does so well, which is keep our community safe, and what ICE is doing, which is really abusing its power, (and) inflaming tensions.“
