EAST LANSING ~ Over the past several days, Michigan State has made bold moves in the transfer portal, adding talent that reflects coach Pat Fitzgerald’s vision for a more versatile and physical roster. Among the most intriguing arrivals is Carson Gulker, a Ferris State standout who brings championship pedigree and rare versatility. Gulker played quarterback, tight end, and H-back during his time at Ferris, racking up over 2,200 rushing yards, 50 touchdowns on the ground, and nearly 1,600 passing yards. His ability to line up anywhere on offense gives MSU a creative weapon who can stress defenses in multiple ways.
The Spartans also strengthened their backfield with two proven runners: Marvis Parrish from Western Kentucky and Jaziun Patterson from Iowa. Parrish flashed big-play ability as a freshman, while Patterson offers a bruising style and Big Ten experience. Together, they add depth and balance to a rushing attack that struggled to find consistency last season. These moves signal a clear intent to reestablish a strong ground game in East Lansing.

(CONTINUED) Up front, Michigan State secured Robert Wright Jr., a reliable offensive tackle from Georgia Southern. Wright started 11 games last season and brings size and discipline to a line that needs stability after significant turnover. On defense, the Spartans added Carlos Hazelwood, a stout interior lineman from Toledo, whose ability to clog running lanes and create pressure will help offset recent departures in the trenches.
Rounding out the group is Kenny Soares Jr., a veteran linebacker who reunites with Fitzgerald after stints at Northwestern and NC State. With 137 career tackles and experience in multiple defensive schemes, Soares Jr. provides leadership and familiarity with the system. Combined with Gulker’s versatility and the influx of talent on both sides of the ball, these transfers represent a strategic blend of youth, experience, and adaptability. Key ingredients as Michigan State looks to turn the page and build momentum heading into spring practice.
