WASHINGTON D.C. ~ U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) joined “‘JR Morning” to share her thoughts on President Donald Trump ordering the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro, saying that the move goes against his campaign promises.
“In the one year that President Trump has been back in office, he has taken military action in nine parts of the world: seven countries, two different oceans,” Slotkin told WJR. “For a guy who literally ran on getting out of forever wars and not getting involved in military entanglements, he’s done the opposite, more than any other president in recent memory. That means your attention as media, my attention, and everything has been focused abroad instead of on things like housing. I mean, we have a housing emergency in the country. I do think that he’s got a taste for looking tough, and that’s what Venezuela is about right now.”
She also said that Trump’s own words prove Maduro’s arrest on drug trafficking and weapons charges is not about drug smuggling, but natural resources.
“The president and his team were saying very openly this is about drugs, it’s not about regime change, it’s not about anything else,” she said. “But the president himself has said, ‘It’s about the oil. They have huge oil resources. We want a piece of that.’ He’s hosting oil executives this week in the White House. I mean, you don’t have to guess what the president is thinking anymore, because he said it on Air Force One, and publicly.”
