PROVIDENCE, RI — Authorities released a person of interest who was believed to be responsible for Saturday’s shooting at Brown University, with the search for a new suspect underway by Rhode Island authorities.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the investigation “now points in a different direction,” with CNN reporting that the Brown shooting followed 75 other school shootings this year in the U.S. All exams and classes have been cancelled for the remainder of the year as the manhunt continues.
The shooting took place at the university’s Barus & Holley engineering building, which left two students dead and nine others wounded. It took place at 4:05 p.m. on Saturday, with the gunman opening fire on the building’s first floor, sending students scrambling for cover. Emergency alerts urged shelter-in-place protocols as over 400 officers and first responders converged on the site.
The previous suspect was arrested early Sunday following a manhunt that involved local, state, and federal officials.
A lockdown order across the Brown campus was lifted Sunday morning, though a police perimeter remained in place around the building and nearby structures as investigators processed the scene.
According to Brown University President Christina Paxson and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, all casualties were students.
