LAS VEGAS, July 25, 2025 ~ Michigan State Head Coach Jonathan Smith addressed the media Friday at Big Ten Media Days, emphasizing roster continuity, player development, and the challenges of competing in what he called “the best conference in America.”
Smith opened by praising the leadership of Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti and the event’s organization. “It is great to be here,” Smith said. “Media days kind of signify the start of the season as we get closer and closer.” He also recognized the three players representing the Spartans in Las Vegas: linebacker Jordan Hall, wide receiver Nick Marsh, and offensive lineman Stanton Ramil, each of whom he credited for leadership and offseason progress.

(CONTINUED) Entering his second year at Michigan State, Smith stressed the importance of roster and staff retention. “Over 70 players on the roster will be with us again,” he said. “That was a vital part.” He noted that all coordinators are returning, allowing for continuity in schemes and further development.
Smith also addressed the development of quarterback Aidan Chiles, who transferred in last year. “He had some outstanding plays and some plays that were not good enough,” Smith said. “It’s our job as coaches to make sure we’re surrounding him with, one, the line of scrimmage and those other ten guys on that offense making sure we’re putting him in the best positions to have success.” He added that Chiles showed significant improvement in the second half of the season and praised his resilience through a year of transition.
When asked about position groups poised for improvement, Smith pointed to the offensive line. “We want to create more competition in that room,” he said, noting the addition of four transfers with college experience. He also credited offensive line coach Jim Michalczik and the benefit of a second year in the same system.
Looking ahead, Smith acknowledged the difficulty of the Spartans’ schedule. “We’ve got to continue to be ready to work to challenge, and we accept that challenge.”
